Ride Leader training

All our leaders must complete Cycling Ireland Ride Leader training to ensure they have the competence and confidence to lead group rides in their local community.

Ride Leader training is a one-day course (9-5.30pm) delivered by a Cycling Ireland tutor. This course is a mix of theory and practical and provides you with the skills and knowledge to safely lead group rides in your local community. To attend any Ride Leader course, you must:

  • Be over 18 years of age.
  • Have the fitness level to ride for approximately 20km, on a route that may contain hilly sections.
  • Be comfortable cycling in group formation in close proximity to up to seven other riders (maximum of 12 participants on each course).
  • Be comfortable cycling on busy roads in close proximity to traffic.
  • Be able to comfortably cycle in a straight line for ten metres with either hand off the handlebars.
  • Be able to ride in a straight line whilst looking over either shoulder.
  • Attend with a bike and helmet in safe working order.
  • Be aware of the basic laws pertaining to cycling on the road.
  • Be willing to complete the vetting process as required.

This assessed one-day course qualifies you to facilitate bike rides for groups.

If you meet the above criteria and are interested in attending this free training course, please register your details here, complete and return a volunteer agreement form to communitybikerides@cyclingireland.ie, indicating which course date you would like to attend.

Community Bike Ride Leader training is provided for free on the basis that you book onto an advertised course and upload bike rides to the Community Bike Rides’ website once you have been activated as a leader. Ride Leader certificates will only be provided to those who complete this process. Any individual who completes free training but chooses not to be activated as a leader will only be able to receive their Ride Leader certificate on payment of €50 to the Cycling Ireland Coach Education Department.
