We meet opposite the church in the picturesque village of Ballinspittle. After our route and safety briefing, we travel briefly to the Main Street and turn right (opposite Centra) on to the R604. After approximately 500 metres, we turn right (opposite the GAA pitch) on to the R600 Timoleague/Courtmacsherry Road. The initial section of this road is a gradual hill for approximately 3.5km, followed by a desent for about 4km. Staying on this road, we will be enjoying some fantastic views from the height out to sea while our descent brings us nearer to the coast and includes more fantastic scenery. At the end of our descent, we are next to the sea and have a view of Harbour View beach. Crossing a small bridge, we continue on past the beach, staying with the coast, and on towards the the historic village of Timoleague. We cross the bridge into Timoleague, immediately turning left on to the R601. Passing the Historic Abbey, we turn left again onto the bridge, taking us on to the Courtmacsherry Road. We stay on the R601, swinging left with the coast - it's flat all the way into Courtmacsherry Village. With the sinking of the Luisitania during WW1, in sight of the coast, the village and Courtmacsherry Lifeboat played a crucial part in rescuing survivors. Arriving in Courtmacsherry, we stop a short distance past the harbour at the 'Travara Lodge' where we can avail of excellent coffee/tea and scones, etc. I can attest to the fact that the coffee and scones are quite nice! Our seating and dining area is across the road next to the water. Suitably relaxed, recovered and refreshed, we depart Courtmacsherry, retracing the route back to Ballinspittle.
