COW 6: Bunclody to Carnew via Tullow.
COW 6: Which is the sixth Ride is our Circuit of Wexford, straddles the borders of counties Wexford, Carlow and Wicklow and takes us to the northwest of Co. Wexford.
We meet in the GAA Park in Bunclody which is on Church Rd. We leave the car park and cycle down into the town, and at the bottom of Church Rd. we STOP. When the way is clear we go across the road and cycle down the Main St. At the Chemist on our left, we go left across the Square and at the Public WC we STOP. We then go left and cross the Slaney and leave the town.
We follow this road as far as a T Junction after the FCJ School and here we go left. After one or two kms we reach a Y Junction, and we go left again. This road takes us through beautiful countryside on the banks of The Slaney, all the way to Clonegal in Co. Carlow.
In Clonegal we cycle over the bridge and cross the Derry River into Co. Carlow. We go straight up through the street passing The Weaver’s Cottage on our left and we continue up the hill until we reach the tiny village of Ardattin. At the pub in Ardattin we turn right and cycle into the town of Tullow which is a distance of about 6/8 kms. We cycle up to the top of the town through the square where we pass the very impressive Fr. Murphy 1798 Monument. At the junction we take a right on to the Shillealagh Rd. Rathwood Garden Centre is a few kms out this road on the right and we will stop here for our Coffee Break.
After the Break we carry on through the rolling hills until we reach Coolkenno. After about 6 kms we reach the picturesque village of Shillealagh in Co. Wicklow. In Shillealagh we go straight and cycle through Coolattin oak woods and Golf Club. At Coolattin Cross we turn right. This road takes us straight down to Carnew. We can take a short break, if necessary, in Carnew and then we continue back to Bunclody on the R746. At Slapper Doyle’s Cross we go left and then pass through Ballingate Forest and Drumderry. After about 8 kms we cross the bridge over the Slaney again and come into Bunclody.
We cycle to the roundabout at the bottom of Main St. and go right. At the Church of Ireland, we go left and the GAA Park where we started our Ride is a short distance up the hill on our righthand side.

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
