Drumgoold Loop

We meet in the car park on the R741 (Old Dublin Road) at The Frying Irishman/Ballyelland Pottery in Castlebridge opposite Wexford Block. This spin is on quiet country roads with little or no climbing.

Leaving the car park, we cycle up the R741 for about one kilometre as far as Ballymartin Cross where we turn left and stop at the next T-Junction. Here we turn right and cycle along quiet country roads through Garylough for a distance of around 5km as far as Cooney’s Cross where we turn left. We continue for about 2km until we reach Ballylucas Cross and at Ballylucas we turn right and cycle for 5.5km to the village of The Ballagh. This part of the road is a little bit bumpy.

When we reach The Ballagh, we turn left onto the R744 towards Enniscorthy with Slieve na gCrann behind us and Slieve na Gioria in front. This is a well surfaced country road. From here, we cycle to Cooladine Cross where we turn left. We continue, on this little road, for about 2km and we cross over the motorway. After about 2km, we reach Drumgoold which is just outside the town of Enniscorthy and from here there are views of Vinegar Hill on our right hand side. At the T-Junction, we turn left and cycle for 8km to Ballymurn. We pass over the motorway again just before Darby’s Gap and this road continues to the villages of Glenbrien and Ballymurn. We can take our break in Ballymurn or in 'The Mill' in Castlebridge when we finish the ride.

Around 2km after Ballymurn we reach Ballylucas, where we turn right and cycle the final 7km back to Castlebridge via The Airfield Road.

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
