Johnstown Castle Loop

We meet at the car park at The Danby Lodge Hotel on the Rosslare Road near Killinick.

We leave the car park and cross the road. If the traffic is very heavy, we will walk across when it is safe to do so. We cycle up to Killinick and take a left turn into the village. At The Merry Elf Pub, we turn right and continue on this road for three or four kilometres. When we reach the T-Junction at Montfield, we turn left. We then reach the R736 where we turn right. We stay on this road until we reach Tenacre where we stop. At this cross, we turn left and almost immediately right and from here, we carry on into the village of Bridgetown.

In the village, we turn right and cross the railway bridge. After the bridge, we turn left and ride for two or three kilometres into Baldwinstown. At the four way stop in Baldwinstown, we turn right and cycle north for about 1km on the R738. At the next small Y-Junction, we turn right and cycle to the village of Murrintown. From here, it’s a short distance to Johnstown Castle which is on the right hand side of the road. We turn right into the castle grounds where we will take our break.

After the break, we cycle back to the main entrance of the castle grounds and we stop. When the road is clear, we turn right and continue as far as the little roundabout at the church. Here we take a right turn and cycle to Piercestown. We carry on through the village and after a few kilometres we reach a junction with the R739 at Rathmakee. We go straight here and cycle to the main Rosslare Road. This section of road has a poor surface. When we reach the main road at Orristown Crossroads, we turn right and cycle back to The Danby Lodge Hotel on the hard shoulder. The hotel is on our left just after the village of Killinick.

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
