Kilmuckridge: A Rural Ramble
We meet for today’s spin at the Church Car Park in the village of Blackwater. Most of this route is on small quiet but well surfaced country roads.
We leave the church car park in Blackwater and we turn right. We cycle up the hill and out of the village for about 1km as far as Crosshue Crossroads where we turn right. This quiet rural road takes us past Castle Talbot on the right and we remain on this road until we reach a T-Junction at Courtclogh Lower. Here we go right, through Ballbreggan, as far as Ballytarsna Crossroads, where we turn right again.
At Ballytarsna, there are church ruins and a graveyard on one side of the road, and a holy well on the other. Cycling along this road, we come to The Island, where the road has a beautiful canopy of foliage overhead. In Ballyhubbock, we turn right and cycle as far as The Church through Ballyadam. At the Church of Ireland, we stop and then turn left. From here, there are great sea views on our right hand side, and after one or two kilometres we arrive in Kilmuckridge, where we will take our break for refreshments in the village.
After the break we cycle straight through the village for about 1km. We turn left, just after Upton Court Hotel and ride through rural countryside for 5/6/km until we reach a T-Junction at Corbally. Here we turn left where we meet the Owenavorragh River. We cross over two small bridges and continue cycling through Craan and Ballinvally until we reach the R741 at Ballyedmond. We stop and turn left and cycle as far as Downes Filling Station at Wells which is a distance of about 1km. We then turn left again.
(If we wish we can stop for another short break at the shop/filling station).
We cycle along this quiet road until we reach Miley’s Turn which is about 1km before Kilmuckridge. We avoid the village and turn right, and when we reach Ballyhubbock we turn left. After a short distance, we go right and cycle back to Blackwater, through The Island, on the same route we took earlier in reverse.
When we reach Crosshue Crossroads we turn left, and the church car part is on our left as we enter Blackwater.

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
