Ride Around the Mountain.

This is a beautiful ride which circles the southern part of the Blackstairs Mountains. It includes parts of Counties Wexford and Carlow and takes us through spectacularly wild countryside.

We meet in the Church Car Park in Kiltealy and start our spin on the R730. We cycle through Askinvillar and Woodbrook Demense. After 4/5km, we reach the R731 where we turn right and cycle to Kilanne, home of the Wexford 1798 Hero John Kelly. After another 4/5km we arrive in Rathnure. Here the views of the mountains are beautiful and after a short spin of about 6km we take a right and we cycle up Priest’s Lane. At the top of the lane, we go left. We continue on this road and go through Templeudigan. When we reach Drummond we stop. We go straight across the road and cycle downhill to the historic St. Mullins on The Barrow River. We will have the break for coffee in the Mullincahain Café on the banks of the river.

After the break, we cycle back up to the Motte and we go straight. At the Y, we keep right and this road brings us to the village of Glynn. Here we keep left and ride along the R729 almost as far as Borris. We pass Clashganny on the left and the views from here over the Barrow are beautiful and perfect for a photo.

Just before Borris, we reach a busy junction where we cross the road and turn right on the R702. Our next stop is the picturesque village of Ballymurphy. There are some hills in this section but nothing too strenuous. Again, we are surrounded by the mountains as we pass through Scullogue Gap. With Knockroe on our left and The Blackstairs Mountains on our right, it’s a short spin of 3/4km back to the village of Kiltealy.

About

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
