Ring of Hook from Arthurstown
Hook Peninsula, with its majestic lighthouse, is one of Ireland’s top visitor attractions. This Spin takes us to the tip of Hook Head giving us magnificent views of the sea and the Lighthouse and maybe even a Humpback Whale!
We will meet at the car park in Arthurstown and from here we cycle straight up the gentle hill on the R733 in the direction of Ramsgrange. After 1km we take the second right and cycle for 3 kms towards the small fishing village of Duncannon. The views of the sea as we approach Duncannon are spectacular. We continue along this road as far as a T Junction where we must stop. Here we turn left and almost immediately right towards The Hook. After a few kms on this section there are great views in front and on our right of Waterford Harbour where The Three Sisters meet the sea, and it is mostly level cycling all the way to The Hook Lighthouse.
After a few kms we turn left onto The Templar’s Way. This road takes us to a full crossroads where we go straight. When we come to the T Junction at Poulfur School we stop and go right and almost immediately left and we cycle around Grange Strand. When we reach Fethard on Sea we go left and continue straight through the village. This road takes us to the beautiful beach of Carnivon where we dismount and walk for 300m passing Baginbun Head which is the site of the first landing of the Anglo Normans in Ireland in 1169. Again the sea views here are beautiful. We continue on this road until we reach a small crossroads where we go left. We cycle through Graigue Great and at the next crossroads we turn left again. From here it’s a straight run all the way to the Lighthouse where we will take our coffee break at the Visitor Centre and enjoy the breath taking views of The Saltee Islands to the east and the town of Dunmore East in Co. Waterford across the harbour.
After the Break, we head back along a straight level road passing the infamous Loftus Hall on the way. At the first Y Junction we turn left and cycle straight towards Duncannon with Waterford Harbour on our left. When we reach Duncannon we follow the one way system through the village and ride back to the main New Line Road between Ransgrange and Arthurstown. Here we stop and then turn left and cycle the short distance back down into Arthurstown.

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
