Slaney Bridges Loop

Today’s spin, a lot of which is on the Wexford Cycle Hub, takes us in a loop from Castlebridge. We cross the Slaney at Edermine and Killurin.

We meet at the Pottery/Frying Irishman Car Park in Castlebridge and from here we make our way up to Ballywish where we turn left. At the next T-Junction, we turn right and after about 5km we reach Cooney’s Cross in Ballybeg where we turn left. This road takes us to Ballymurn. From Ballymurn, we carry on as far as the Grotto where we turn left into the village of Glenbrien. From Glenbrien, we cycle for about 5km until we reach the N11 at Edermine.

As this is a busy wide road we can walk across and then cycle for about 200m as far as the left turn towards Edermine Bridge. After about 1km, we reach the bridge which is narrow and there is a railway crossing at the far side so extra caution is necessary. After crossing the bridge, we cycle for about 1km until we come to a T-Junction. Here we turn left and cycle south with The Slaney on our left all the way to Killurin. In Killurin, we go left and cross The Slaney again over Killurin Bridge. This is a very picturesque section of the river. We will stay on the Wexford Cycle Hub and cycle for about 4km until we reach Ferrycarrig. We turn left at Kitestown and we use the hard shoulder on the main road until we reach Oylegate where we take our break.

After the break we take a right at the traffic lights, and we cycle for 3/4km through Redgate and then cross the Sow River. At the top of the hill, we turn right. We pass St. Killian’s Well and when we reach The Airfield Road, we turn left. At the end of this road, we go right and ride straight back down into the village of Castlebridge. Just after the Frying Irishman in the village we stop and then go left, and the car park is on our left-hand side at The Mill Pottery.

About

I live in Castlebridge in Co. Wexford and I am a keen leisure cyclist. I try to get out as often as possible and enjoy cycling mostly within my own locality. I would love to see more people out on their bikes, taking advantage of all the health and social benefits that cycling has to offer.
